Los compuestos orgánicos volátiles biogénicos (COVBs) son compuestos no-metílicos incluyendo alcanos, alquenos, carbonilos, alcoholes, ésteres, éteres y ácidos. El principal es el isopreno (C5H8) y la unión de dos o más estructuras de este compuesto da origen a los monoterpenos (CxHy). La emisión de COVBs produce diversos efectos en la atmósfera desencadenando diversas reacciones con •OH, •NO3 y O3 generando la formación de compuestos oxigenados y ozono troposférico. En este estudio se caracterizan las emisiones y se determinan los factores de emisión de los COVBs en distintas etapas de crecimiento de dos especies arbóreas de la Región Metropolitana: una nativa, Quillaja saponaria (Quillay) y otra exótica, Quercus suber (Alcornoque). A cada una de ellas se les estudia sus emisiones a distintas edades. El muestreo se realizó en una cámara de encierro estático por adsorción en tubos TENAX incorporando sensores de control de temperatura, humedad relativa y radiación fotosintéticamente activa. Las muestras son desorbidas y concentradas mediante un equipo de desorción térmica automático (DTA) y se cuantifican mediante GC-FID. Los COVBs emitidos son ordenados de acuerdo a su habilidad para la formación de ozono troposférico, según el índice potencial formador de ozono (IPFO); se identificaron 6 compuestos del total de COVBs estudiados. De estos compuestos seleccionados el Alcornoque adulto emite 8,2%, el joven 11,95% y el pequeño 7,45% del total estudiado. El Quillay adulto emite 5,7%, el joven 5,8% y el pequeño 8,1% del total estudiado. En relación a cada especie los individuos en crecimiento presentan mayores emisiones que los individuos adultos. Los mecanismos propuestos entre •OH, •NO3 y O3 y los compuestos de mayor IPFO generan como intermediario principal al biradical Criegee, el cual dependiendo de como se sintetice generará diferentes productos en la atmósfera.
